The AOC Banyuls wine is a type of fortified wine made from old vines grown in the foothills of the French Pyrenees bordering Catalonia. The process of producing this wine is known as "mutage" and is similar to that of Porto, is to add alcohol to the wine when sugar levels are still high, so the wines are matured in oak barrels, the result is a wine similar to Port but is lower in alcohol.
