Pla de Bages

GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION AND INFORMATION OF INTEREST It is located in the Bages region, Barcelona. Its name comes from the Roman city of Bacassis, others affirm that its name comes from the god Bacchus, since without a doubt the winemaking tradition of the region has been rooted since time immemorial, being the heir to the great wine-producing extensions of central Catalonia. The monks of the monastery of San Benet del Bagés promoted from the S.X. the cultivation of the vine and the production of wine throughout its area of influence, becoming one of the main economic activities until the arrival of phylloxera, which caused a serious crisis in the sector. Recovery came in the 20th century with the creation of the Artés cooperative, which, in addition to preserving the Picapoll grape, a variety adapted to the area, introduced new vine varieties and more elaborate production techniques. CLIMATE The climate is Mediterranean with medium mountains, which produces marked thermal oscillations between day and night. Morning mists are recorded in winter and little rainfall. SOIL, VINES AND MAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF THEIR WINES The soils are alluvial, between clayey and sandy. Vineyard huts built with dry stone are traditional in the area. The cultivation area is found mainly following the course of the Llobregat river and its tributaries. For the white wine, the native grape Picapoll is used, as well as Macabeo, Chardonnay and Parellada. For the red Ull de Llebre, Merlot, Cabernet and Chardonnay. The rosés are clean and with a broad fruity expression. The reds are intense in color, with spicy aromas, balanced and with good tannins, they pair perfectly with red meat, game and Iberian pork.
